Transforming a Room Without Starting Over

You don’t always need to completely renovate a room to give it a fresh, entirely new feeling. Sometimes, a few thoughtful changes can transform a space – and a home office is the perfect example.

In this office, the existing built-in cabinets were given a new life with a beautiful new paint color. Repainting cabinetry is one of my favorite ways to dramatically change the character of a room without the expense and disruption of replacing it. The new color creates an updated backdrop and immediately changes the mood of the space.

New hardware can make an equally significant difference. Replacing dated knobs and pulls with something more distinctive adds an element of jewelry to the cabinetry and gives the entire room a more finished, custom look.

The transformation continues underfoot with a new area rug. A rug can bring warmth, pattern, color, and texture into a room, while also helping to visually define the workspace. It’s often one of the easiest ways to introduce a new design direction.

Finally, rather than replacing the existing chair and ottoman, they were recovered in fresh fabric. Reupholstering favorite pieces is both practical and creative – it allows you to keep furniture you love while giving it an entirely new personality.

The result is a room that feels refreshed, cohesive and completely different, without tearing everything out and starting from scratch.

The lesson? A successful room transformation isn’t always about buying something new. Paint, hardware, fabric and a well-chosen rug can sometimes be all it takes to make an old space feel new again.
